Journeyman

Continuing Education Classes from Oct. 2007 to Apr. 2008

Per the Agreement with Mechanical Contractors Association of Omaha, Inc., Article IV, Proficiency Improvement, each member shall complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of upgraded Journeymen Training annually.  A maximum of four (4) hours in excess of those required may be carried to the next year.  The minimum training requirements became effective for the 2002-2003 contract year and each year thereafter for the term of the Agreement.  Credit for classes taken will be calculated at 2:1 ratio for the number of hours the class is held; except for first aid & CPR which will be calculated at 1:1 ratio.  

EXAMPLE:  If you successfully complete a 24 hour class, then you will have earned twelve (12) hours of upgraded Journeyman Training Hours of continuing education hours (CEH).  The eight (8) hour requirement of Continuing Education will be fulfilled for that contract year and you have earned an extra four (4) hours of class room hours that will be rolled over to the next contract year.

Union members who hold a current CPR certification and First Aid certification by May 10, 2008 will be allowed two (2) hours for each certification toward the minimum requirement for the 2007-2008 contract year.  Any union member maintaining the following licenses shall receive two (2) hours of upgraded Journeyman Training for each license toward satisfying the requirement.

  • A current Backflow License
  • A current Med-Gas License
  • A current license to work in Bellevue , Ne.
  • A current license to work in Council Bluffs , Ia.

EXAMPLE:  If you have: 

Current 2007-08 First Aid

= 2 continuing education hours

Council Bluffs License

= 2 continuing education hours

Bellevue License

= 2 continuing education hours

Total upgraded 2007-2008
Journeyman training hours

= 8 continuing education hours

Those individuals not in compliance with the eight (8) hour upgraded Journeyman Training will not receive the raise for that contract year or any subsequent contract year in which the requirement is not met.

The following classes have been approved by the Labor/Management Committee.  If you have any questions about the Continuing Education, please feel free to call the Omaha Training Center at 333-5859 or toll free at 877-675-9911.

Please call 2 to 3 days before your class begins, to make sure the class is still on.

A class will be cancelled if the minimum
number of members has not signed up!

1.) Basic Computer Class:  Instructor – NBDC Instructor 

Six (6) CEH

This class is for members who do not have the basic skills to use a computer.  You must attend all classes to receive your continuing education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will have the basic skills to operate a computer.  The Basic Computer Class will be held at the Omaha Training Center on the following days.

Members who have taken this Basic Computer Class can repeat this class.

Three (3) Tuesdays, October 4, 11, and 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Three (3) Tuesdays, November 1, 8, and 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Computer classes must have minimum of 15 members enrolled to be held.

2.) Advanced Computer Class:  Instructor – NBDC Instructor      

Six (6) CEH

This class is for members who have the basic skills, but want to learn more about different programs.  You must attend all classes to receive your continuing education hours.  Upon completion of this class, you will have the knowledge to use different programs.  This Advanced Computer class will be held at the Omaha Training Center on the following days.

Members who have taken this Advanced Computer Class can repeat this class.

Three (3) Tuesdays, January 10, 17, and 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. .

Three (3) Tuesdays, March 7, 14, and 21, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

3.) CPR& 1ST Aid Training Classes:   Instructor -  Mike McEvoy & Mike Pittz

Four (4) CEH

This class is for members to renew their CPR and 1st Aid, and for members who do not have CPR and 1st Aid Training.  This class is a (4) hour class.  Upon the completion of this class, you will have a written and a hands-on test.  You must attend all 4 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  These CPR & 1st Aid classes will be held at Both Training Centers on the following days.

4.) Journeyman Omaha City License:  Instructor – Rich Hazuka II

Twelve (12) CEH

This class is for members who do not have a City of Omaha Steamfitters License .  This Class will meet three (3) hours a night for ten (10) weeks.  You must attend all 30 hours to receive your continuing education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take the Omaha City License test at a cost of $35.00 to you.  The Journeyman Omaha City License class will begin on the following day.

This class will begin on Thursday January 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

5.) Backflow License Class:  Instructor – Jim Kuehn

Twelve (12) CEH

This class is for members who do not have a Backflow License.  This class is a 40 hour class, meeting three (3) hours a night for thirteen (13) weeks.  You must attend all 40 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take a written test, a hands-on test, at a cost of $144.00 to you.  The Backflow License Class will be held at the Lincoln Training Center , and begin on the following days.           

This class will begin on Monday September 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

6.) Med-Gas License Class:  Instructor – Joe Bauer & Mike Stodolka 

Twelve (12) CEH

This class is for members who do not have a Med-Gas License.  This class is a 40 hour class, meeting three (3) hours a night for thirteen (13) weeks.  You must attend all 40 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take a written test, and a braze test, at a cost of $105.00 to you. There will be two (2) classes, one will start in October and one will start in January.  The Med-Gas License class begins on the following days.  These classes will be held at the Omaha Training Center and Lincoln Training Center .           

This class will begin on Tuesday October 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.            

This class will begin on Tuesday January 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

7.) Welding Classes:  Instructor – Pat Greise & Paul Vogel

Twelve (12) CEH

This class is for all members who want basic skills and for members to sharpen their skills.  This class is a 24 hour class, meeting three (3) hours a night for eight (8) weeks.  You must attend al 24 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  There will be two (2) classes, one will start in October and one will start in January.  These Welding class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

8.) Safety Classes:  Instructor –  Dan Christensen  

 Two (2) CEH

This class is for members who want to learn more about Safety & OSHA.  This class is a 4 hour class, meeting one (1) night.  You must attend all 4 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take a written test.  The Safety Classes will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

9.) CFC License:  Instructor – Dan Christensen  

Six (6) CEH

This class is for members who do not have a CFC License.  This class will meet three (3) hours a night for four (4) weeks.  You must attend all 4 nights of class to receive your Continuing Education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take a CFC test.  The CFC License class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

10.)  Lincoln Code Update Class:  Instructor – Bob Siemsen, Jr.   

Four (4) CEH

There has been a change in the Plumbing Code in Lincoln , Nebraska from the National Plumbing Code to the Uniform Plumbing Code.  This class is for members who want to learn about the code change.  This class will meet for eight (8) hours on one Saturday.  You must attend all eight (8) hours of class to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class will be held at the Lincoln Training Center and begin on the following days.  You must bring your Uniform Plumbing Code book with you.

This class will begin on Saturday March 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m.

11.) Journeyman Lincoln Plumbing License:  Instructor – Bob Siemsen, Jr. 

Twelve (12)CEH

This class is for members who do not have a City of Lincoln Plumbing License .  This class will meet three (3) hours a night for thirty four (34) weeks.  You must attend all 102 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take the Lincoln City License test at a cost of $50.00 to you.  The Journeyman Lincoln Plumbing License class will begin on the following days.

This class will begin on Wednesday September 21, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

12.) Experior License Class:   Instructor- John Tefft

Twelve (12) CEH

This class is for members who do not have a Council Bluffs or Bellevue License.  This class is a 27 hour class, meeting three (3) hours a night for nine (9) weeks.  You must attend all 27 hours, to receive your Continuing Education hours.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take the Experior License test at a cost of $60.00 to you will be able to obtain a Bellevue and Council Bluffs HVAC license by receiving a 75% or better on the exam.  There will be two (2) classes, one will start in September and one will start in January.  This class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

13.) Auto CAD – (1) Class:   Instructor- Doug Legge

Twelve (12) CEH

This class is for members who want the basic skills of Auto CAD drawings.  This class will meet three (3) hours a night for thirteen (13) weeks.  You must attend all 39 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  The Auto CAD (1) class will begin on the following day.

14.) Pneumatic Control Functions & Operation Principles Class:   Instructor-  John Tefft

Six (6) CEH

This class will cover the fundamentals of pneumatic controls,   Basic Control Theory and Definitions:VAV control, Transmitters, plus single and dule- reciever controllers.  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for three (3) weeks.  You must attend all 12 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and  begin on the following days.

This class will begin on Monday February 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

15.) Basic Water Chillers Class:   Instructor- Mark Dickau   

Six (6) CEH

  First Five (5) Members This class will have strong emphasis on Basic Centrifugal Chiller principals, while also highlighting basic Reciprocating Screw and Scroll technology.  It will cover technical information ,basic refrigeration principals, operation and maintenance, and trouble – shooting.  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for (3) weeks.  You must attend all 12 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.This class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.           

This class will begin on Wednesday February 1, 2006 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

16.) Advanced Centrifugal Water Chillers Class:   Instructor- Mark Dickau 

Eight (8) CEH

  First Five (5) Members            ( Prerequisite:  Basic Water Chillers Class,  or ( equivalent experience )This class will have strong emphasis on Centrifugal overhaul procedures.  The course shall cover;  precision measuring techniques, a step by step Centrifugal tear-down procedure, and give the member a good working knowledge of Centrifugal compressor design and operation.  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for Four (4) weeks.  You must attend all 16 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  The Advanced Centrifugal Water Chillers class, will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

17.) Basic Refrigeration Class:   Instructor- Jeff Crouse

  Ten (10) CEH

This class is to give members a general knowledge of Basic Refrigeration Principles or for members wishing to Refresh their knowledge.  Operation of the refrigeration vapor compression cycle will be covered.  Hands-on with Hampden Trainers.  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for Five (5) weeks.  You must attend all 20 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  The Basic Refrigeration class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.           

This class will begin on Tuesday October 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

18.) Water Source Heat Pump and Heat Pump Systems:   Instructor- Lee Burt

Eight (8) CEH

This class will cover the fundamentals and theory of Heat Pumps and Heat Pump Systems.  Hands-on Horizontal and Vertical water source Heat Pumps, and Hampden Trainers.  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for Four (4) weeks.  You must attend all 16 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  The Water source Heat Pump and Heat Pumps Systems class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

19.) (Simutech)  Hot Water Boiler Simulator Training System Class:   Instructor- Pat Ryan

Six (6) CEH

This class will be on Computers: 

This class is a Hot Water Boiler Simulator and troubleshooting training system, designed for both students and HVAC Service Technicians.  Faults may be pre-selected by the Instructor or pre-selected by the student, for insertion into the simulator for testing and troubleshooting.  Up to 30 commonly encountered mechanical and electrical faults maybe pre-selected.  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for three (3) weeks.  You must attend all 12 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.

The Simutech class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

20.) Orbital Tube Welding Class:  Instructor - Dave Johnson & Joe Bauer

Ten (10) CEH

Introduction to Orbital Automatic Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process.  This class will teach the theoretical basics for weld program development and programming weld equipment.  This class will be four (4) hours a night for five (5) weeks.  You must attend all (20) hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class is limited to (6) members.   The orbital welding class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

This Rigging class is for members who need to know more about Rigging, and for members who want to get a Eight (8) hour Rigging Certification from L. U. 464.  Upon the completion of this class, you will take a written test of a passing score of ( 85% ).  This class will meet four (4) hours a night for two (2) weeks.  You must attend all (8) hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  The Rigging Certification class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

This class is for members who have the skills to make a Certification Weld.  This class will meet Four (4) hours a night for three (3) weeks for practice and One (1) Saturday to take the UA weld test.  You must attend all 20 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  The UA Welding Certification class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

25.) UA STAR   HVACR Certification Class:   Instructor- Pat Ryan

Six (6)CEH

This class is for members who want to further their career in the HVACR field.  The UA STAR  Certification assures employers that these journeyman have had the Training necessary to excel in HVACR Service.  Successful completion of the UA STAR exam earns applicants 30 hours of College Credits toward an Associates Degree.  It will also give Contractors a marketing edge and provide end users with a better – trained and highly educated workforce.  This class will meet three (4) hours a night for three (3) weeks.  You must attend all 9 hours to receive you Continuing Education hours.  The UA STAR Certification Class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

26.) Omaha Mechanical Codes Class:   Instructor- Tom Phipps

Two (2) CEH

This class is designed to give the members a general knowledge of the City’s new Codes, and existing codes.  This class is a four (4) hour class, meeting one (1) night.  You must attend all 4 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and begin on the following days.

This class is designed to give the members a general knowledge of Metropolitan Utilities District, changes, updates, and existing Codes.  This class is a four (4) hour class, meeting one (1) night.  You must attend all 4 hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class will be held at the Omaha Training Center and  begin on the following days.

This class is for members who have a Back-flow License, this class counts for Three (3) hours of Continuing Education for the State of Nebraska .  You must attend all hours to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class will be held at the Lincoln Training Center and begin on the following days.

32.) Potable Water sizing & Copper Soldering Class:   Instructor- James Kuehn & Bob Siemsen Jr.

Four (4) CEH

This class will cover the fundamentals of sizing water mains and services, building water supply systems, cross connections.  Also this class will cover the technical as well as the practical of “Soft” soldering with lead free solder.  This class will meet three hours a night for tow (2) weeks.  You must attend both nights of class to receive your Continuing Education hours.  This class will be held at the Lincoln Training Center and begin on the following days.
