The objectives of the first year courses will provide each apprentice with:
- an awareness of the history and heritage of the United Association. The National Committee recommends that presentations and discussions on heritage and the future of the pipe trades continue throughout the entire period of apprenticeship.
- instruction in the identification and use of tools
- instruction in the proper care of tools
- the training and skills necessary to install all types of pipe, tube, fittings and valves.
- an understanding of job safety and health
- training in soldering and brazing
- training in oxy-fuel cutting
- the fundamentals for solving math problems, and the necessary math for taking pipe measurements
- a knowledge of rigging and signaling
- an introduction to matter, liquids, hydraulics the science required to understand the work of the pipe trades
