Plumbing: First Year of Instruction

The objectives of the first year courses will provide each apprentice with:

  1. an awareness of the history and heritage of the United Association. The National Committee recommends that presentations and discussions on heritage and the future of the pipe trades continue throughout the entire period of apprenticeship.

  2. instruction in the identification and use of tools

  3. instruction in the proper care of tools

  4. the training and skills necessary to install all types of pipe, tube, fittings and valves.

  5. an understanding of job safety and health

  6. training in soldering and brazing

  7. training in oxy-fuel cutting

  8. the fundamentals for solving math problems, and the necessary math for taking pipe measurements

  9. a knowledge of rigging and signaling

  10. an introduction to matter, liquids, hydraulics the science required to understand the work of the pipe trades

  2. advance instruction in electricity

  3. the ability to understand building plans and specifications

  4. training in oxy-acetylene welding

  5. training in shielded metal-arc welding

Plumbing: Fourth Year of Instruction

The objectives of the fourth year courses will provide each apprentice with:

  1. training in the types of plumbing fixtures and how to rough-in and set them

  2. planning service work troubleshooting plumbing systems

  3. repair and maintenance of other than standard bathroom fixtures and appliances

  4. installation of natural and LP gas systems

  5. principles and requirements of state, local or provincial codes

  6. an ability to understand technical and isometric drawings

  7. advanced plan reading and a background in the field of service work, stressing special installations.

  2. skills in advanced drawing and coordination, sketching and sleeve drawings

  4. the understanding of backflow prevention and cross-connection control and training to be a certified installer/tester

  5. the necessary instruction to prepare for a Lincoln City License
